Fourteen

“You’re totally bananas,” she said. Not in a mean way. But in a surprised way.

Yes, I know what I said sounded crazy. But it also sounded true. I had a gut feeling.

“Why did you say that?” Emily grabbed me by the shoulder. At first I thought she was holding me steady so she could knock me out with a punch. But instead she stared at me intently. “Tell me what you mean.”

“Well,” I said. The idea had popped into my head, but now I found it hard to expand on it. This was like having the answer to a math problem but not being able to show my work. “Well…I…uh…”

“Explain yourself now!” Emily shook me a little bit. Her fingers were digging into my shoulder. Why was she freaking out like this?

“Well, let’s look at the facts,” I said. “You just appeared out of nowhere, right?”

“No,” she said. “I was found in a library. I didn’t just appear there.”

“Did anyone see you come in?” I asked.

“No,” she said. “But people don’t notice everything.”

“Librarians do,” I said. They certainly notice when books are late. “But let’s just say you showed up there.”

“Okay,” Emily said.

“Well, what if you just showed up because you were beamed there?” I said. “Like, transported from another universe?”

“But there’s no reason to think that.” She still hadn’t let go of my shoulder. It was starting to hurt. A lot. “I could easily have banged my head and woken up there.”

“Did your head hurt that day?” I asked.

“No.”

“And you told me you weren’t on any missing-persons list. So…” I pointed my finger up into the air. “Maybe you were sent here.”

“Sent?” Her hand squeezed my shoulder even harder.

“Beamed,” I said. “Like I was. It explains why the lizard men could see you. And why they could see me and Mick. They are hunting us. But they left everyone else alone. And they yelled at us about our weight.”

“They said our weight was unbalanced,” she corrected.

“Yes, and I have no idea what that means. But I bet they knew we were from someplace else.”

She let go of my shoulder. Ow.

“You know…” Emily took a deep breath. There was a hissing sound behind her. I panicked for a second before I realized it was the bus braking again. “I think you may be right—”

The bus hit something. Hit it very, very hard and came to a screeching halt.

Emily and I didn’t come to a halt though. It’s science. If something stops suddenly, the things on that something keep going. Emily flew out of our seat and hit the floor. I banged against the seat in front of me.

I got up. Nothing was broken. I went to help Emily, but she was already standing. “Look. We hit a truck,” she said. She pointed at the front door of the bus, which had just been yanked open.

Two men in gray suits floated up the steps and down the aisle toward us. They had their eraser guns out.
